Who are you and what do you do?

 

Adam Bergman, I'm the Group Vice President of Advertising and Data Sales for VIZIO. 

 

Tell us about VIZIO’s journey from hardware company to integrated platform.

 

It's an interesting journey. I think it's one that's centered uniquely around customer experience. We spent 20 years perfecting the art of delivering great hardware to our customers. A great visual experience, a great auditory experience, hell-bent on that premium experience at a great value that our customers came to expect.

 

As the media world and the consumption trends in the world changed to a streaming-first environment, we knew we also needed to support that longstanding hardware mission with a really, really great platform and software experience. So as the years went on, we followed the trends and built our own in-house software solution today as the market calls it SmartCast.

 

And that native operating system delivers an unbelievable, high-quality content experience to our customers the second they take that smart television out of the box.

 

Why is VIZIO’s Newfront called ‘Limitless’?

 

‘Limitless’ is something we've been thinking about for a while. We like to bring our internal culture to our partners and to the market whenever we can. We are fortunate to be led by our CEO, William Wang, who has always instrumented a “why not” personality to our business. I've never been in a conversation with him when he didn't say, why not? Why can't we do that?

 

And so we often think of this limitless perspective as – there's nothing stopping us but our own decision-making, our own sort of analysis in the market. So the idea of Limitless is really about, how do we expand into a variety of different verticals, ad categories, creativity – we want to unlock the entire marketplace to take a “why not” approach.

 

I often find that people approach streaming with reticence. We're a legacy-driven media culture, right? You bought television for 30 years in a really specific way and it's hard to change. We all battle that legacy. Limitless for us is, let's share this journey together. Let's not pretend any of us are right. Let's pretend that we are all making credible and informed decisions and working together to build a great future.

 

What does Limitless mean for the VIZIO consumer, marketer, and measurement?

 

Limitless to the consumer means an experience that never stops improving upon itself. A streaming platform that only gets better and smarter and more personalized. Limitless means a visual and an auditory experience on your smart television that knows no bounds. That knows no limits.

 

I think to the marketer, Limitless means entering a world of scale and of data-driven decision-making that you've never seen before. You've never been this empowered as a brand marketer to take the tool sets of digital and bring them to television.

 

Limitless to the measurement community means adding insights to analysis, taking data into real actionable optimizations, taking data into real time and actionable understanding of the customer journey. 

 

How do you apply being Limitless as a leader at VIZIO?

 

Taking the mindset of Limitless to being a leader is a couple of things. One, I immediately think about the need to be a chameleon. Every person responds differently, and you have to show up for people differently. There's this interesting balance. I always think about how I can show up consistently, but uniquely for that person.

 

To me, showing up consistently is the attention we pay one another, the respect we offer to hear somebody's position. To listen before we speak. I think being Limitless as a leader is not pretending that someone's job remit and scope today is what's going to get them excited tomorrow.

 

I think the ability to understand what drives us all at a really, really foundational level, is how you end up finding success professionally, and more often than not, I think being a Limitless leader is not offering answers, but asking great questions. People are powerful. People are smart. They understand themselves far better than any of their bosses or leaders do. Our job is to help them find the path themselves and those who show up with intention and with passion and who show up really caring about what they do every day.

 

Their path is limitless. They can do absolutely anything.
