3 Big Takeaways from Mike O'Donnell on the Future of TV Advertising

VIZIO

Connected TV has evolved beyond simply reaching audiences. Today, the biggest opportunity lies in connecting discovery, advertising, commerce and measurable outcomes into one seamless experience.

As TV operating systems become the front door to entertainment, they're also reshaping how brands engage consumers.

Here are three of the biggest takeaways from a recent conversation with Mike O'Donnell, VP at VIZIO.

The TV Operating System Has Become the Front Door to Entertainment

For years, TV operating systems worked quietly in the background. Today, they're becoming the primary place consumers discover what to watch, and where brands can begin meaningful customer journeys.

"We've seen this evolution where the operating system was a passive experience. It's shifted more to search and discovery. You used to think of the TV operating system as plumbing—it was invisible, but it was important. Today, more than two-thirds of the time spent on our platform is spent streaming within the operating system environment."

Audience Is the Starting Point. Outcomes Are the Scoreboard.

CTV has transformed what's possible for advertisers, but O’Donnell says that success isn't just about better targeting... It's about understanding what happens after someone sees an ad.

"Audience planning matters. Reach and frequency still matter. Outcomes are kind of the scoreboard. CTV is known to deliver reach and frequency and audiences, but how do we work them through that purchase path?”

Commerce Media Should Enhance the Viewing Experience (Not Interrupt It).

As commerce and television continue to converge, O’Donnell believes the goal isn't to turn the living room into a checkout cart. Instead, it's about helping brands better understand the consumer journey while preserving a great entertainment experience.

"We're not looking to build an experience where people interrupt family movie night to go buy laundry detergent. What we think about is how we help our advertising partners understand that journey—from seeing something on television, to searching for a product, to ultimately buying it."
